Why do any of this?

It is a fair question, and it is usually the first one we get asked standing on somebody’s factory floor. Here is the honest answer.

Most of what we install pays for itself, and we can show you the arithmetic for that on the ROI page. But the payback is not why people keep us around for years. They keep us around because, for the first time, they can see what their factory is actually doing — hour by hour, line by line — and once you can see it, you start running it differently.

Most Canadian factories are still analog.

There is remarkable equipment in Canadian manufacturing, and almost none of it is talking to anybody.

Where there are controls at all, they are often a SCADA system somebody commissioned twenty or thirty years ago — one screen, in one room, doing exactly the job it was built for and nothing else. Everything outside that room is a monthly bill, a clipboard, and somebody’s memory of how it usually runs.

That is not a criticism. It is just where the industry is. But it does mean the questions that matter most cannot be answered: what did that line cost to run last Tuesday? Is the compressor working harder than it was in March? Why was the water bill up nine per cent?

A meter answers all three in about a week. Beside this is a single day of municipal water into a food factory — the overnight hours never come back to zero. Forty-six litres a minute keeps running with the building shut. On a monthly bill, that is invisible.

What the visibility actually buys you.

Saving money is the easy half to explain. These three are the ones clients bring up a year in.

  1. Communication

    When the maintenance lead, the operations manager and the person who signs the utility cheque are all looking at the same screen, the meeting stops being about whose number is right and starts being about what to do.

  2. KPIs that are actually measured

    Cost per unit, energy per tonne, runtime, downtime, product temperature — recorded continuously, instead of reconstructed at month end from a bill and a good memory.

  3. Competitiveness

    Two factories make the same part. One of them knows what an hour of production costs, and can tell you which shift is cheaper. That is the one that prices the job right.

And it is both halves on the same screen — the utilities that pay the project back first, and the production and process numbers most factories have simply never had.

The block above is compressed air, hour by day, for one week. The warm patch at three in the morning is on every row, Sunday included. That is not a shift that ran late — it is a schedule nobody has looked at since commissioning, and a schedule is a work order.

An analog factory has nothing to feed an AI.

Everybody is being told to do something with AI at the moment. Here is the part that tends not to get said out loud: this is where AI is going to play — with your data. That is the food it needs. An analog factory cannot feed it.

You cannot ask a model why Tuesday costs more than Thursday if nobody ever wrote down what Tuesday cost. Digital transformation is not a software purchase you make one afternoon; it starts with measurement, and measurement takes time to accumulate. Everything genuinely useful that comes afterwards — predictive maintenance, optimization, forecasting, whatever arrives next — is built on a few years of honest, minute-by-minute history.

The data has to exist before anything clever can be done with it.

That is the least glamorous argument for starting now, and it is the one we believe most. The factories that begin recording this year are the ones that will have something worth pointing a model at in three years. The ones that don’t will be starting from a blank page while their competitors are three years in.

What we do, and what we don’t.

We will be straightforward about the boundary. We give you data you have never had, so that your team can run the factory better. We are not going to pretend we can fix your boiler.

That is your millwright’s job, or your contractor’s, and they are better at it than we would be. What we can do is tell them exactly what the boiler has been doing, at two in the morning, every night for the past four months — which is usually the part nobody has.

The other thing we bring is every other factory floor we have walked. We see the same handful of problems in a dairy, a plastics factory and a foundry, and the fix one of them found last spring is very often the fix the next one needs. We cross-pollinate: no names, no client numbers, just what worked and what didn’t.

Why we are in a hurry about it.

Canadian manufacturing is under real pressure — input costs, energy prices, and competitors who have been measuring themselves properly for a decade. Every factory that gets meaningfully more efficient is a factory that stays open, and stays open here, with the people who work in it.

We are a small company in Guelph and we are not going to overstate our part in that. But it is the reason this is the work we chose, and it is why we would rather be standing on a floor in Ontario than doing almost anything else.
